[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "I Am His Mother" by Carlos Solorzano.]
3 out of 4 stars Review by tiffanynettles Share This Review I Am His Mother by Carlos Solórzano is a uniquely written adaptation of the experiences that Mary went through being the mother of Jesus. The book begins with John explaining how he had found hidden documents that Mary had written during her final days. The book then goes on to show how after reading the scriptures Luke and Mathew wrote about the memories Mary had told them, she decides it would be a good idea to write down her own thoughts and feelings about her life as the messiah's mother.
I was completely intrigued by this book from the second I began reading it. Never before have I ran across an idea such as this one and I was curious to see how it would turn out. In the beginning, I did have a bit of difficultly getting into the characters and the world in which the book is set because of the fact that it is written as though it is a biography. However, the more I read the more impressed I was by how the story was set up.
I loved how throughout the tale the author had inserted actual parts of the scripture in a way that they just fit in with the story perfectly. In my opinion, the fact that the story was guided by scripture showed me that the author had done a lot of research and is knowledgeable on this topic. I felt that he wasn’t just using his imagination which made the entire book feel as though it had a ring of truth to it.
For the first half of the book I definitely felt that the author could have expanded on the story a bit. I would have loved to have seen more information and memories about the early childhood years of Jesus. However, half way through the book is when the story finally started becoming more in-depth and you really start to connect with the characters and the difficulties that they faced trying to spread the lord's word in the times that they lived in.
All in all, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. This book turned out to be an exceptional read, because anything it lacked in the beginning it more than made up for by the end. While reading this book I found myself, as a mother, putting myself in Mary's shoes and truly beginning to comprehend the trials and tribulations she faced because of how important her son was. When she pondered how proud she constantly is of her son I swelled with motherly pride as well, and when she had to endure the agony of watching her son being crucified I wept with her. This is an amazing book to read for any mother because it reminds us of how much our children truly mean to us and how we would go through anything to be there for them.
