Among the Books.
Many demons hoard things. Gold, jewels, victims. But they’re not an escape from Hell; they’re a symptom of it. Ben hoarded books. Great toppling stacks of them. When he couldn’t find an excuse to escape to Earth, he’d go to his library and find the only reliable means of escape from torment a human soul has ever known. Ben frequently dreams of Hell. Often he wakes with a damp, salty pillow. Other times he thrashes himself out of bed. More often than he can easily brush aside to the woman he shares a bed with, he’s pulled from sleep screaming. But not all of Ben’s dreams are bad. On occasion, he finds himself among his books. The greatest treasure he could imagine. Sometimes, when his life on Earth gets truly difficult and overwhelming, he goes to the library and sits among the books. He holds them, breaths in their scent, feels their weight, listens to the rustle of the pages, and the hushed whispers around him. He goes to remind himself that he found a type of peace, even in Hell. He goes to remember that being at peace is possible. He goes to remember himself. Read more about Ben Brody, formerly known as the demon Ronoven, in Always Darkest and Before the Dawn, Books I & II of The Arbitratus Trilogy. Book III, Fiat Lux is currently under construction. On the run from Heaven and Hell, a demon becomes a hero.
