The Lazarus by W.H. Matlack
The Bay Area is a sinister, living, breathing entity with a wicked sense of humor. James Bill, Private Investigator, spends most of his time chasing around cheating spouses, but this is all about to change when a mysterious woman enters his office, leaving behind an envelope with an old pawn ticket. No instructions, just a ticket and the name of a pawn shop. The mystery thickens when the woman ends up dead in the basement of his building, wrapped like a mummy in thick cobwebs.
James decides to take backup in Jose, a San Francisco Detective Lieutenant, when he attempts to cash in the old ticket. Little does he realize they are about to embark on a quest neither one may survive. Each clue, each discovery, leads them to a bigger challenge, and more madness. It’s a sinister web they must fight to untangle before the whole city comes crashing down around them.

This sounds absolutely fascinating. I don’t think I have read a book like this before. Definitely interested.
